General Surgery Sets

BusinessMed® General Surgery Sets are ready-assembled general surgical instrument sets for one procedure or one level of surgery: open abdominal, hernia and anorectal operations, cesarean and gynecologic procedures, vascular and access procedures, and basic, minor and dressing work. Each general surgery set page lists its contents item by item — instrument, size and quantity — so the set can be checked against the procedure before ordering.

Types of general surgery sets

Abdominal surgery sets

The General Surgery Instruments Set and the Major General Surgery Instruments Set carry self-retaining and hand-held abdominal retractors such as the Balfour, Deaver and Richardson with clamps and forceps for open abdominal surgery. Procedure-specific sets cover laparotomy, infant laparotomy, appendectomy, gallbladder and bile duct surgery and hernia and hydrocelectomy.

Anorectal sets

The rectal instruments set groups anoscope, rectal speculum, pile clamp and forceps, and the sigmoidoscope set pairs rigid sigmoidoscope, proctoscope and anoscope tubes with an LED illumination head.

Obstetric and gynecologic sets

Sets for cesarean section, delivery, dilatation and curettage, IUCD insertion, vaginal surgery, anterior and posterior repair and prolapse surgery each hold the specula, dilators, retractors and forceps named for that procedure.

Vascular and access sets

The vascular surgical instrument set, the Nabatoff vein stripper set, the IV cut-down set, the pleural biopsy set and the intubation set cover vessel work, vein stripping, venous access, pleural biopsy and airway intubation.

Basic, minor and dressing sets

The minor basic instrument set, the major basic instrument set and the basic surgery set are general-purpose sets of retractors, clamps, scissors and forceps for minor and major operations; the dressing and hollowware sets hold the instruments and dishes for wound dressing and treatment rooms.

Specialty sets

Sets for amputation, basic hand surgery and post-mortem examination, a dissecting kit and a restorative dental set complete the range.

How to choose a general surgical instrument set

  • Start from the procedure. Each general surgery instrument set is either a procedure set or a base set: a procedure set (appendectomy, cesarean, D&C) holds the instruments named for that operation; a basic or major set is the general-purpose base that a theater builds on.
  • Check the contents list. Every set page lists each instrument with its size and quantity, and the piece count is computed from that list; compare it with the theater's own count sheet.
  • Minor or major. Minor sets carry small retractors and mosquito-size clamps for superficial work; major sets add deep abdominal retractors and longer clamps for open-cavity surgery.
  • Case or tray. Where the live listing includes a tray, case or container, it is counted as a piece and named in the contents.

What are general surgery sets used for?

General surgery tools in these sets serve open abdominal surgery (laparotomy, appendectomy, cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration, hernia repair), anorectal procedures and endoscopy, cesarean delivery and gynecologic surgery, vein stripping and vascular procedures, venous cut-down, pleural biopsy, airway intubation, amputation, hand surgery, wound dressing and teaching dissection.

How BusinessMed surgery sets are made

The instruments in each set are made of German stainless steel with a satin, non-reflective finish, are reusable and autoclavable and carry a 5-year warranty. Non-steel parts — trays, mats, light sources, handles — are named on the set page.
