Root Canal Spreaders

BusinessMed® Root Canal Spreaders are lateral condensers, also called endodontic spreaders: a smooth, tapered, pointed instrument is wedged beside the master gutta-percha cone, presses it against the canal wall and opens space for accessory cones. The range runs from thin points for narrow canals to larger tips for wide ones: file-numbered sizes, the D11 family and numbered patterns.

Types of root canal spreaders

File-numbered spreaders (25, 40, 50)

These numbers share the size system of files and cones, so the spreader size can be read against the preparation: the 25 spreader for fine or curved canals, the 40 and the 50 for wide or posterior canals shaped to a large size.

D11 family (D11, D11S, D11T, D11TS)

One pattern in four tip sizes, from the standard D11 down through the D11S and the thin D11T to the D11TS for very narrow canals.

Numbered patterns (3, 40S, GP2, GP3, MA57, W2S)

Spreaders whose numbers are not file sizes: the GP2 for long, narrow canals, the MA57 for narrow or fine canals, and the short W2S Wakai for the middle part of molar and premolar canals.

How to choose an endodontic spreader

  • Tip size to the canal. Every page lists the tip diameter, from 0.20 to 0.50 mm. A thin point passes the master cone in a narrow or curved canal; a larger tip opens more space in a wide one.
  • File number or pattern number. The 25, 40 and 50 match file and cone numbers; D11 and numbered patterns are chosen by their stated tip size.
  • Length. The Wakai is a short spreader; GP2 suits canals too long for the shorter thin patterns.
  • Handle. All our spreaders are single-ended on the H5 handle.

What are spreaders in endodontics used for?

Obturation by lateral condensation: each spreader in endodontics opens a wedge-shaped space beside the master gutta-percha cone so accessory cones can be added. In spreader dentistry the thin points serve narrow incisor, canine and curved canals and the larger ones molar and other wide canals. Vertical condensation uses Root Canal Pluggers; endo spreaders and pluggers both belong to the obturation set.
