How to choose orthodontic tools

  • By appliance. Fixed appliances use the bonding, banding, wire and ligature groups; clear aligner treatment uses aligner pliers; removable appliances are made with wire bending pliers such as the Adams.
  • By step. Bonding → tweezers and gauges; banding → hand instruments and crimping pliers; wire work → pliers and cutters; ligation → Mathieu pliers, ligature directors and pin and ligature cutters; removal → band and adhesive removing pliers or the debonding set.
  • Match the cutter to the wire. Distal end, hard wire and pin and ligature cutters are not interchangeable.

What are orthodontic instruments used for?

Bonding and banding brackets, tubes and bands; forming, placing, cinching and torquing archwires; ligation with elastic and steel ties; contouring and crimping crowns, bands and attachments; adjusting clear aligners at the chair; and debonding and debanding at the end of treatment. Ortho instruments of this kind work at the chair and on the laboratory bench.
