Root Canal Plugger

BusinessMed® Root Canal Pluggers are vertical condensers — each plugger in endodontics has a flat, blunt end that packs softened gutta-percha down the canal during obturation. Sizes rise with the face diameter, so a fine plugger works near the apex and a broader one in the wider coronal part. The range covers anterior and posterior single-ended sizes, three double-ended pairs and the Glick 1 with a cutting blade.

Types of root canal pluggers

Anterior pluggers (8, 9, 10, 11)

Long single-ended pluggers for incisor and canine canals, with a 29 mm working part: the 8 anterior plugger compacts toward the apex of slim canals, the 9 and 10 in the middle third, the 11 anterior plugger in the wider coronal third.

Posterior pluggers (9 to 12)

Single-ended pluggers for molar and premolar canals, with a 22 mm working part, in half steps where the gap between sizes matters: 9, 9-1/2, 10, 11, 11-1/2 and 12.

Double-ended pluggers (9/11, 13, 57)

Two sizes on one instrument, 21 mm per end: the 9/11 packs deeper with the small end and follows in the coronal part with the large one; the 13 is the smallest pair, for narrow canals; the 57 covers narrow to moderately wide canals.

Glick 1

The Glick 1 blade plugger has a plugger end and a blade that cuts away excess gutta-percha at the orifice.

How to choose an endodontic plugger

  • Tooth group. Anterior pluggers have the longer working part for incisor and canine canals; posterior pluggers are shorter for molars and premolars.
  • Size to the canal zone. Work from fine to broad: a fine endo plugger near the apex, then larger sizes up the canal. Diameters are measured 1 mm from the tip.
  • Depth marks. Pluggers are commonly marked at 5 mm intervals to read penetration depth.
  • Single or double-ended. A double-ended plugger dental instrument puts two consecutive sizes in one hand.

What are pluggers in endodontics used for?

Obturation of root canals by vertical condensation of warm or softened gutta-percha — apical, middle-third and coronal compaction in anterior and posterior teeth — and, with the Glick 1, removing excess gutta-percha before the coronal part is condensed. Lateral condensation uses Root Canal Spreaders.
