Delicate ring-handled patterns
The Webster needle holder has a short, delicate frame for small needles and fine suture in plastic surgery; Halsey jaws close scissor-like onto a flat, blunt tip; the Ryder carries a narrow 1 mm delicate jaw; the Crile-Wood holds small to medium needles. See the Halsey needle holder, the Ryder needle holder and the Crile-Wood needle holder.
Needle holders with scissors
Gillies and Olsen-type patterns put suture scissors behind the needle-holding jaw so one instrument drives the needle and cuts the suture; the Gillies has asymmetric shanks with unequal, offset rings. See the Gillies needle holder, Foster-Gillies, Olsen-Webster and Olsen-Hegar patterns.
Micro and fine-vascular needle holders
Spring and round-handle micro needle holders open by themselves when finger pressure is released; a round handle is rolled between the fingers to turn the needle, and diamond-dust jaws grip micro needles. See the Castroviejo needle holder, the Barraquer micro needle holder and the double-action microsurgery needle holder. A vascular needle holder with a narrow tip — the micro vascular pattern, Diethrich and Spencer — carries fine needles at full reach.
Rhinoplasty needle holders
Tebbetts needle holders belong to the Tebbetts rhinoplasty line; the Tebbetts intranasal needle holder is a bayonet design that keeps the hand out of the line of sight, and delicate and ultra-delicate Tebbetts patterns complete the group.
General patterns in this range
Mayo-Hegar, Baumgartner, Derf, Heaney, Bozeman, Finochietto, Nolan and the Mathieu palm-grip needle holder are general-surgery patterns that also sit in this category.
How to choose a plastic surgery needle holder
- Needle and suture size. Fine sutures in facial and skin closure call for a delicate jaw (Webster, Halsey, Ryder); micro needles call for a Castroviejo or Barraquer with a diamond-dust or delicate jaw.
- Handle. Finger rings with a ratchet for skin and soft tissue; spring or round handles for microsurgery, where the needle is turned by rolling the handle.
- Scissors or not. Gillies and Olsen patterns cut the suture without an instrument exchange.
- Jaw insert. Tungsten carbide inserts are marked by gold-plated rings.
What are plastic surgery needle holders used for?
Skin and soft-tissue closure in plastic and reconstructive surgery, facial and hand surgery, microsurgery and microvascular anastomosis, ophthalmic and oculoplastic suturing, and intranasal suturing in rhinoplasty.
How BusinessMed needle holders are made
German stainless steel with a satin, non-reflective finish; tungsten carbide jaws where marked, and a titanium option on the Barraquer. Reusable, autoclavable, 5-year warranty.
