Amalgam Carriers

BusinessMed® Amalgam Carriers pick up freshly mixed amalgam in a hollow barrel and release it into the cavity preparation, one increment at a time. The range covers lever carriers with a thumb-driven plunger, gun or syringe-type carriers with curved nozzles, double-ended carriers with two barrel sizes, and a retrograde carrier for root-end fillings.

Types of amalgam carriers

Lever carriers

The bore sits roughly at a right angle to the handle and a spring-loaded thumb lever drives the plunger. Barrels are named by size — small, medium, regular, large: see the small carrier, the regular 15 cm carrier and the large carrier. Long patterns such as the 20 cm carrier add posterior reach.

Gun and syringe-type carriers

The plunger runs along the body and is pushed by the thumb against a finger flange; the nozzle is curved or angled. See the amalgam carrier gun syringe and the medium gun-type carrier.

Double-ended carriers

Two barrels on one instrument, regular and large or equal sizes, for two loads per pass: the regular / large carrier and the medium carrier.

Orthodontic carriers

Orthodontic amalgam carriers are a smaller pattern, sold for orthodontic and small restorative work: the orthodontic amalgam carrier and the 15.5 cm orthodontic carrier. A circular-shaped orthodontic carrier is also listed.

Retrograde carrier

A narrow-cannula plunger instrument that places amalgam or another root-end filling material in the root-end cavity during apicoectomy: the retrograde carrier.

How to choose an amalgam carrier

  • Increment size. A small barrel places small loads in narrow or conservative preparations without overfilling; a large barrel carries more per load into large preparations.
  • Grip. Lever carriers work with a thumb lever; gun and syringe types suit operators who prefer a syringe grip.
  • Reach. Angled nozzles and long patterns reach distal and proximal areas of posterior teeth.
  • One or two sizes. Double-ended amalgam carriers put two barrels in one hand.

What are dental amalgam instruments used for?

Carrying mixed amalgam from the well to the preparation and releasing it in increments for posterior amalgam restorations, and placing root-end fillings at the apex in apicoectomy.
