Laryngoscopes and Diagnostic Instruments
BusinessMed® Laryngoscopes and Diagnostic Instruments cover airway and bedside examination. The largest group is the laryngoscope — fiber optic, conventional and disposable blades and handles — with Magill forceps for intubation. The rest are examination instruments: otoscopes, ophthalmoscopes and combined sets, dermatoscopes, reflex hammers, tuning forks and a lighted tongue depressor holder.

Types of diagnostic instruments
Laryngoscopes and airway instruments
- Fiber Optic Laryngoscope — green-system blades and LED handles: the lamp sits in the handle.
- Standard Conventional Laryngoscope — blades with their own LED lamp on hook-on handles. The two systems do not light each other.
- Disposable Fiber Optic Laryngoscope — single-patient blades and a handle.
- Magill Forceps — angled forceps that guide tubes and remove foreign bodies, in three sizes.
Ear, eye and skin examination
- Otoscopes, Ophthalmoscopes and Otoscope and Ophthalmoscope Sets — ear and eye scopes, single or as a set.
- Dermatoscopes — light and magnification for the skin.
- Lighted Tongue Depressor Holder — an LED-lit holder for one-handed throat examination.
Neurological and hearing examination
- Reflex Hammers — Taylor, Queen Square, Babinski and Buck patterns.
- Medical Tuning Forks — Hartmann forks for the Rinne and Weber hearing tests.
How to choose a laryngoscope
- System first. Fiber optic (green system) and conventional parts do not mix; buy blades for the handle you have.
- Blade. Each laryngoscope blade is Macintosh (curved), Miller (straight, commonly infants) or McCoy-type (levering tip); the direct laryngoscope view depends on choosing the shape for the patient.
- Reusable or single use. Reusable blades are reprocessed; disposable ones are used once.
What are diagnostic instruments used for?
Direct laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation; examining the ear canal and eardrum, the back of the eye and pigmented skin lesions; testing tendon reflexes; and bedside hearing tests. Laryngoscopes serve anesthesia and emergency airway work; the other medical diagnostic tools serve bedside examination.
How BusinessMed diagnostic instruments are made
Laryngoscope blades are stainless steel and handles chrome-plated brass or stainless steel; Magill forceps are German stainless steel. Reusable items are autoclavable with a 5-year warranty; disposable laryngoscopes are single-patient use. The other instruments' specifications are on their product pages.
