Dental Cotton Pliers
BusinessMed® Dental Cotton Pliers, also called dressing pliers, are angled tweezer-type instruments that carry cotton rolls, pellets, gauze, wedges and other small items in and out of the mouth. The range covers three patterns — College with angled tips, Meriam with upward-bent serrated beaks and the short Perry — with serrated or smooth tips, and locking versions that hold the tips closed.

Types of dental cotton pliers
College pliers (#317)
The College pattern has angled tips and is the standard cotton plier dental trays carry. Our College pliers come with serrated, smooth, narrow and short tips, with a serrated or smooth handle, and in a locking version. The blue titanium College pliers are coated so they can be picked out on the tray; see also the College pliers with serrated tip and smooth handle.
Meriam pliers (#318)
Meriam pliers carry upward-bent, serrated beaks. They come with regular, short and extra-long tips and with a lock; see the Meriam pliers with regular tip.
Perry pliers
Perry pliers have a short body with an offset beak that reaches posterior areas — angled or curved.
How to choose cotton pliers
- Pattern by reach. College pliers with angled tips are the general chairside pattern; Meriam pliers have upward-bent beaks; the short Perry with its offset beak reaches the back of the mouth.
- Tip surface. Serrated tips grip cotton and gauze; smooth tips are offered on the College pattern.
- Locking or plain. A locking pair keeps the tips closed on a cotton roll or pellet without finger pressure, so it can be passed or set down loaded.
- Length. Our cotton pliers dental range runs from a 5 in Perry to 6.5 in College and Meriam patterns.
What are cotton pliers used for?
Dental cotton pliers place and remove cotton rolls and gauze for isolation, and carry pellets, paper points, wedges and articulating paper in and out of the mouth in restorative and hygiene appointments; on the tray and the laboratory bench they pick up small items instead of the fingers.
