Dental Spoon Excavators

BusinessMed® Dental Spoon Excavators — each a dental excavator with a small spoon-shaped end — remove softened, carious dentin and the coronal pulp. Ours are long-shank endodontic patterns that reach the floor of the pulp chamber to clear dentin, pulp tissue and debris: double-ended 31L, 31W, 32L and 33L excavators with spoons from 1 to 2 mm, and the Glick No. 2.

Types of dental excavators

Long-shank endo spoon excavators (31L, 32L, 33L)

The numbers rise with spoon size: the 31L endo excavator has a 1 mm spoon, the 32L 1.5 mm and the 33L 2.0 mm, each spoon excavator double-ended.

Oval spoon 31W

The 31W endo excavator has 1.3 mm oval spoons on the same long shank.

Glick No. 2

The 2 Glick endo excavator is a double-ended long-shank pattern, 18 cm overall.

How to choose a dental spoon excavator

  • Spoon size. 1 mm (31L), 1.3 mm oval (31W), 1.5 mm (32L) or 2.0 mm (33L); the spoon size is the main difference between the numbers.
  • Shank length. All our excavators are long-shank patterns, made to reach the floor of the pulp chamber.
  • Handle. The W and L patterns sit on the H4 hollow handle.

What are dental excavators used for?

As an excavator in dentistry, each pattern here is used for pulp chamber debridement in root canal treatment — removing coronal pulp tissue, dentin and debris from the chamber floor — and removing carious and softened dentin before a restoration. For locating canal orifices, see Endodontic Explorers.
