Types of plastic surgery scissors

Facelift scissors

Facelift patterns are the core cosmetic scissors of the range. In a facelift (rhytidectomy) the skin flap is undermined in the subcutaneous plane. Many facelift patterns are double-beveled with semi-sharp outer edges, so the opened blades pass through the plane before the closed blades cut: Gorney-Freeman, Kaye and Kaye-Freeman, with a long Gorney-Freeman platysma version for neck work and the Solz Gold Tip for mammaplasty, abdominoplasty and rhytidectomy sets.

Nasal and cartilage scissors

Nasal scissors are named for the cartilage or area they work on: lower and upper lateral cartilage (Cinelli, Fomon), dorsal (Fomon dorsal, Fanous), angled Converse scissors for the nasal tip, and Joseph nasal scissors as the general nasal dissecting pattern. Saber-back blades dissect when opened and cut when closed.

Micro scissors

Castroviejo scissors are spring scissors whose handle leaves reopen the blades after each squeeze; round handles roll between the fingertips to turn the blades, as on the Blondeel scissors. Micro scissors pair short fine blades with a long body for magnified work.

Delicate dissecting scissors

PAR scissors — plastic and reconstructive — are delicate curved tungsten carbide scissors with one serrated blade. Iris, slim Metzenbaum, Aufricht and Stevens tenotomy scissors handle fine dissection; Stevens have short blades on long shanks with blunt tips. See the plastic surgery scissors with Supercut blades.

Stitch and suture scissors

Spencer stitch scissors carry a crescent hook on one blade; Littler suture scissors have a suture hole in the blades; Westcott stitch and tenotomy scissors have short micro blades.

General patterns in this range

Mayo, Mayo-Carroll, Metzenbaum and Kelly scissors are general-surgery patterns that also sit in this category.

How to choose plastic surgery scissors

  • Procedure. Facelift and neck → facelift patterns; rhinoplasty → nasal and cartilage scissors; microsurgery → micro scissors; skin and fine dissection → PAR, iris, delicate patterns.
  • Edge. Supercut pairs a razor-sharp blade with a micro-serrated one, so tissue is cut instead of pushed; tungsten carbide inserts keep the edge longer.
  • Blade shape. Curved blades follow contours with the tips in view; straight blades cut along the line of sight; semi-sharp outer edges let the blades spread-dissect.
  • Handle. Ring handles for most work; spring and round handles for micro scissors.

What are plastic surgery scissors used for?

Flap undermining in rhytidectomy and platysmaplasty, cartilage and dorsal work in rhinoplasty, cephalic trim of the lower lateral cartilages, microsurgery, fine dissection in reconstructive and hand surgery, and suture removal.
