Fiber Optic Laryngoscope

BusinessMed® Fiber Optic Laryngoscopes are the “green system”: the lamp sits in the handle and a fiber bundle in the blade carries the light to the tip, with a green ring marking the parts. The range covers Macintosh, Miller and McCoy-type blades, blades with an integrated light guide, blade sets and LED handles in medium, small and stubby sizes.

Types of fiber optic laryngoscope blades and handles

Macintosh and Miller blades

The curved Macintosh blade sits in the vallecula in front of the epiglottis and lifts it out of the line of sight; the straight Miller blade with a curved tip passes beneath the epiglottis and traps it, and is commonly used in infants.

McCoy-type levering blades

Macintosh geometry with a hinged tip raised by a lever, designed for difficult laryngoscopy, including limited neck movement: the TeleTip moveable blade #3, sizes #2 and #4, the integrated flexi tip blade and the FlexiTip moveable set.

Integrated light guide blades and sets

German-profile blades with an integral fiber bundle — the integrated fiber optic blade and the Macintosh integrated set. "German profile" names the blade shape.

LED handles

The handle holds the batteries and the lamp: medium, small and stubby. A short handle is the option where a long one would be blocked by the chest wall, as in obese or pregnant patients.

How to choose a fiberoptic laryngoscope

  • Stay in one system. Fiber optic blades take light from a green-system handle; conventional blades carry their own lamp. The two do not light each other — conventional parts are in Standard Conventional Laryngoscope.
  • Blade shape. Macintosh curved for most adults; Miller straight, commonly for infants; McCoy-type for difficult laryngoscopy.
  • Blade size. Each blade page lists its number; sets carry several sizes.
  • Handle length. Stubby for patients where a long handle meets the chest.

What are fiber optic laryngoscopes used for?

Direct laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in anesthesia and emergency airway work, viewing the larynx and placing the tube under direct vision. Single-patient fiber optic laryngoscopes are in Disposable Fiber Optic Laryngoscope.

How BusinessMed fiber optic laryngoscopes are made

Stainless steel blades and handles as stated on each page; reusable, autoclavable and covered by a 5-year warranty. Each green system laryngoscope handle lights fiber optic blades only.
