Dental Mouth Gags

BusinessMed® Dental Mouth Gags hold the mouth open during oral surgery, extractions and airway procedures, so the clinician does not have to keep the jaws apart by hand. The range covers two self-retaining designs: the scissor-action Molt gag with curved blades that rest on the teeth, and the Jennings frame gag with a ratchet on one side.

Types of dental mouth gags

Molt mouth gag

The Molt works like reversed scissors: closing the finger rings opens the curved blades, which rest on the upper and lower teeth, and the ratchet holds each step. Molt gags are made in pediatric to adult sizes; ours is the 4-inch Molt mouth gag, sized for children.

Jennings mouth gag

The Whitehead-type gag is a hinged frame with a ratchet on each side; the Jennings mouth gag is the same frame with the ratchet on one side only, so it is opened and locked from that side while the other side stays clear of the operating field.

How to choose a dental mouth gag

  • Teeth or frame. The Molt rests on the teeth and opens in steps; the Jennings is a frame that holds the jaws apart for work on the palate, jaws and throat.
  • Patient size. The 4-inch Molt suits a child's jaws; larger Molt sizes are made for adults.
  • Side access. The one-sided ratchet of the Jennings keeps the other side of the mouth clear.

What are dental mouth gags used for?

Propping the mouth open during dental extractions, including for sedated patients who cannot hold the mouth open; holding the mouth open for oral surgery on the palate, jaws and teeth; and keeping the jaws apart in ENT procedures and airway management. A dentist mouth gag is also used in pediatric dentistry, where the small Molt fits a child's mouth.
