How a dental cartridge syringe works
In the most commonly used design, the breech-loading aspirating syringe, the cartridge is loaded through an opening in the side of the barrel. A harpoon on the end of the plunger engages the rubber stopper of the cartridge, so the stopper can be drawn back as well as pushed — this is what makes an aspirating dental syringe. Check each product listing for its loading and aspiration type.

How to choose a dental anesthetic syringe
- Cartridge size. Match the syringe to the cartridges the practice stocks; most hold 1.8 ml, some 1.7 ml.
- Aspirating or not. A harpoon on the plunger is needed for aspiration; check the product listing before ordering.
- Grip. Thumb ring and finger-grip shapes differ between dental syringes; pick the one that sits best in the hand.
Care of reusable syringes
Reusable syringe dental teams use are cleaned and autoclaved after each patient; the harpoon and piston are replaced when they wear.
