Fiber Optic Surgical Instruments
BusinessMed® Fiber Optic Surgical Instruments are retractors and specula with a light guide on the blade, so a deep pocket or cavity is lit from inside, together with the parts that feed them light: a mains LED light source, a reusable fiber optic light cable and a battery-powered wireless LED source that plugs straight into the retractor. Many lighted retractors also carry a suction channel.

A fiber optic light cable carries light from a separate source to the instrument through glass or plastic fibers in a sheath, with a connector at each end. The fiber optic light source is a 150 W white LED unit on AC 230 V with adjustable intensity and two cable sockets for illuminated instruments; the fiber optic light cable is 225 cm long. The wireless LED light source runs on AA batteries and plugs directly into the fiber optic port of a lighted retractor, with no cable. The Tebbetts breast retractor kit comes with its own LED source and light cord.
Types of fiber optic surgical instruments
Lighted breast retractors
Most of the range is for breast augmentation, reduction and reconstruction, where the implant pocket is deep: Tebbetts lighted retractors with suction, toothed or smooth, such as the Tebbetts fiber optic lighted breast retractor; the Biggs mammaplasty retractor with fiber optics and suction tube; the lighted breast retractor with fiber optics and suction in several blade sizes; and Ferreira and Engler patterns. How each fits the procedure is on Breast Surgery Instruments.
Facial retractors
The Ferreira fiber optic face lift retractor and the Freeman flap retractor serve rhytidectomy; the Wieder retractor is a short lighted retractor for breast and facial surgery.
Nasal instruments
The Aufricht nasal retractor with fiber optics lifts the dorsal skin in rhinoplasty with a lit blade, and the Killian nasal speculum with fiber optic illumination comes in several blade lengths for rhinoplasty, septoplasty and anterior rhinoscopy.
Deep tissue retractors
The fiber optic Deaver retractor and the Padgett-Deaver retractor are lighted versions of the hand-held deep retractor, and the Harrington retractor has a sweetheart blade with a light guide and an irrigation tube. See Plastic Surgery Retractors & Skin Hooks for the unlit patterns.
How to choose a fiber optic retractor
- Procedure and depth. Breast pockets take the long Tebbetts, Biggs and Ferreira blades; facial flaps take the shorter Ferreira face lift, Freeman and Wieder retractors; the nose takes the Aufricht and the Killian speculum.
- Suction. A suction channel clears smoke and fluid from the lit field, so choose a model with suction when the pocket fills with smoke or fluid.
- Light supply. A mains light source with a cable suits a fixed setup; the wireless LED source frees the retractor from the cable.
What are lighted surgical retractors used for?
Lighting and holding deep pockets and cavities: the implant pocket in breast augmentation, reduction, mastopexy and reconstruction; facial flaps in rhytidectomy; the nasal vault and septum in rhinoplasty and septoplasty; and deep wound layers in plastic and general surgery.
How BusinessMed fiber optic instruments are made
The lighted retractors and the speculum are made of German stainless steel with a satin, non-reflective finish; they are reusable, autoclavable and covered by a 5-year warranty. The light source, light cable and wireless LED source are listed on their own pages.
