How to choose a medical tuning fork

  • Frequency. Hearing tests are most often done with a 512 Hz fork, offered on the stainless steel fork; the low frequencies are on the Hartmann French style fork. Choose the frequency on each product page.
  • Single fork or set. The Hartmann set holds five forks.
  • Material. Our forks are listed in stainless steel; each metal tuning fork page names its material.

Tuning fork uses: medical hearing tests

  • Rinne test — the vibrating fork is placed on the mastoid bone and then held beside the ear canal, comparing air conduction with bone conduction.
  • Weber test — the fork is placed on the forehead, vertex or chin, and the patient reports whether the sound is equal in both ears.

Together these two tuning fork medical tests help tell conductive from sensorineural hearing loss. The steel tuning forks here are listed for this examination work.
