Adson Extracting Forceps Horizontal Serrated is a tissue forceps and graft-handling forceps of the Adson pattern, manufactured by BusinessMed Instruments®, for use in Hair Transplant Surgery (FUE / FUT), Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, and Dermatology (Dermatologic Surgery).

Adson Extracting Forceps Horizontal Serrated grasps the follicular unit — a naturally occurring bundle of 1–4 terminal hairs with associated sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscle, and perifollicular connective tissue — at the epidermal collar of the occipital donor scalp, and seats the follicular unit graft into the recipient site slit in alopecic scalp dermis across the FUE graft extraction phase, FUE graft implantation phase, and FUT graft implantation phase.

Longitudinal Serration Jaw Grip and Axial Graft Retention

Fine flat platform tips carry longitudinal horizontal serrations running along the platform tip length — oriented parallel to the instrument axis, lengthwise along the jaw face. This serration geometry creates contact ridges that run in the direction of graft travel during recipient site insertion. The lengthwise orientation resists axial slippage of the follicular unit along the jaw face at the moment of slit entry — the primary slippage mode in techniques where the graft must travel a defined depth before seating — without requiring increased digital closure pressure to maintain grip. Cross-serrated tips resist lateral displacement; longitudinal serrations resist axial displacement: these are mechanically distinct grip geometries, and instrument selection follows the surgeon’s dominant slippage mode in their technique. Spring-action thumb forceps returns the jaws to the open position on release of digital pressure for continuous single-handed graft cycling.

Perifollicular Dermal Tissue Response and Graft Viability

The published acceptable clinical threshold for FUE is ≤5% graft transection rate. The hair follicle bulb — the dermal papilla — is the anatomical structure at risk when forceps grip at bulb depth or premature traction before punch release of subcutaneous follicular attachments produces a transected, non-viable graft that reduces yield and fails to grow post-implantation. Longitudinal serrations preserve the flat platform contact surface that avoids penetrating the epidermal collar while providing the surgeon axial graft retention through the insertion stroke into pre-made recipient site slits of defined depth and direction.
