Description

A fiber-optic breast retractor performs three jobs with one instrument: it holds the pocket open, delivers light to where the work is happening, and clears smoke or fluid through an integrated channel. It is built for situations where a deep, narrow pocket has to be retracted and seen into at once, and where a separate light source or suction wand would occupy a hand that isn’t free.

Light at the tip, not into the pocket

The fiber optic bundle runs the length of the shaft and terminates at the blade tip, so illumination originates inside the pocket rather than being cast in from outside. That difference matters most at depth, where an external light is blocked by the retractor itself and by the surrounding tissue.

Integrated suction

The suction channel is built into the same body as the blade and the light path. Smoke and fluid clear from the field being illuminated, rather than from wherever a separate wand happens to be positioned.

Working end

The blade is spatulate, with serrated dentition along the face. The serration holds tissue against the blade rather than letting it slide as the pocket opens — the practical effect is that retraction is maintained without repeatedly repositioning.

Choosing a blade size

Blade geometry is given as length × width in millimetres. Length determines how deep a pocket the blade can reach and hold. Width determines how far the retraction force is spread across the tissue, and how much of the working field the blade
itself occupies.

Blade sizeReachSpreadTypical use

Two rules cover most selections. Wider blades distribute retraction force over more tissue, which reduces point loading but occupies more of what you can see.
Longer blades reach deeper but need more clearance at the incision. Where access is tight, the narrower blade at the same length is usually the better choice.

Warranty

Five years against manufacturing defects on the instrument, from date of purchase.

Twelve months on the fiber optic bundle. The shorter term reflects how optical fiber behaves rather than how it is made: fibers are affected by handling and repeated sterilisation, and the industry treats the optical element separately from the instrument for that reason. This warranty applies where the handling guidance below has been followed.

Neither warranty covers damage from misuse, kinking, crushing, dropping, unauthorised repair, or sterilisation outside the recommended parameters. Warranty service is by repair or replacement at our discretion.

Checking light transmission

Fiber-optic instruments have a failure mode solid instruments do not: individual fibers in the bundle fracture over time, so light output falls off gradually rather than failing outright. The degradation is easy to miss because it happens slowly.

Hold the instrument against a plain light background and look at the tip output, then compare it against a known-good instrument. A visible difference means fibers have been lost. Checking on a schedule catches it before it affects a case.

Handling and sterilisation

This instrument is reusable and sterilisable. Most fiber-optic failures are caused by handling rather than by sterilisation itself, so the following matter more than the cycle count:

  • Coil loosely. Never stretch, kink or bend sharply — fibers inside the sheath break before anything is visible from outside.
  • Never secure with rubber bands or ties.
  • Do not stack heavy instruments on top of it in a tray.
  • Do not drop the connector end or let it strike a hard surface.
  • Use distilled water in the steriliser reservoir. Tap water leaves mineral staining.
  • Inspect for cuts, crushing and light loss before and after every use.
  • Match the light source output to the instrument. Excessive wattage generates heat at the connector.
